Miguel Pirela-Cruz, MD, and other team members of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso went on a mission trip to Guatemala to provide children with free hand surgery, according to El Paso Herald-Post.
Here are three notes:
1. This was Dr. Pirela-Cruz's 11th trip to Guatemala with the nonprofit Guatemala Healing Hands Foundation. The foundation offers specialized healthcare to residents with congenital hand conditions, burns and injuries.
2. As a member of the founding team, Dr. Cruz was part of the organization's 2004 launch.
3. Alongside Dr. Pirela-Cruz, medical students and residents saw 125 surgical patients and performed 53 operations over five days.
