As more men undergo joint replacements, the average age of patients undergoing hip replacement surgery dropped from 66 to 65 years old, according to CNN.
Here are five key statistics:
1. The average age for both male and female patients undergoing knee replacement surgery also dropped from 68 to 66 years old.
2. Annually U.S. physicians perform roughly 700,000 total knee replacements and 400,000 total hip replacements.
3. Female patients make up 62 percent of all joint replacement procedures. This is due to high rates of arthritis in women 26 percent compared to in 19 percent of men.
4. Of all patients undergoing total hip replacements, 54 percent are obese or morbidly obese. Seventy-nine percent of total knee replacement patients are obese or morbidly obese.
5. In the last 15 years, the number of non-Hispanic white patients undergoing joint replacement surgeries has dropped while the number of African American patients has increased.
