PersonaCARE software assesses mortality risk in older patients with orthopedic fractures: 5 takeaways

Orthopedic

Orthopedic surgeons at New York University Langone Health developed analytic software that identifies which middle-aged and elderly patients face a greater mortality risk after surgery for an orthopedic fracture. The findings were presented March 6, 2018 at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 2018 Annual Meeting in New Orleans and in Geriatric Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehabilitation.

Here are five things to know.

1. PersonaCARE is a novel, predictive deep-learning software that uses an algorithm called "Score for Trauma Triage in the Geriatric and Middle Aged." STTGMA is a validated mortality risk score that evaluates age, comorbidities, vital signs and anatomic injuries. PersonaCARE calculates a score from zero to 100 to determine a patient's mortality risk.

2. Trauma is the seventh-leading cause of death in adults aged 65 or older in the U.S.

3. The study authors investigated whether adding frailty markers to the STTGMA tool would improve risk assessment and enhance the software's ability to predict outcomes of a middle-aged and elderly trauma population.

4. The researchers calculated scores with the PersonaCARE software using the original algorithm and the modified version containing additional markers of frailty: existing disability, reliance on an assistive device for mobility and malnutrition. The addition of these other common frailty factors did not appear to enhance the STTGMA tool’s predictive capabilities.

5. At NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, the PersonaCARE software is currently used for all hip fracture patients undergoing a hip replacement or operative fixation. Future research will look at the integration of this software with hospital accounting data and with the electronic medical record and the impact that may have on early intervention and care pathways.
