Scott Ryan, MD, chief of orthopedic trauma surgery at Boston-based Tufts Medical Center, performed surgery on a New York man who was attacked by a shark off the coast of Cape Cod, Mass., according to the Boston Globe.
Here are three things to know:
1. Dr. Ryan and his team performed eight surgeries on the victim during the course of a week. The man needed several hundred stitches.
2. The orthopedic trauma surgery chief also removed two fragments of shark teeth from the victim.
3. Dr. Ryan compared the injuries from the shark bite to injuries from the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 due to their severity and depth.
