Kentucky orthopedic surgeon Dr. Frank Buono passes away

Frank L. Buono, MD, 84, died Sept. 24, Bowling Green Daily News reports.

Dr. Buono was a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. He received his medical degree from Philadelphia-based Drexel University Hahnemann Medical College before serving 10 years in the U.S. Air Force. He practiced at Bowling Green, Ky.-based Graves Gilbert Clinic and served as president of the Bowling Green-Warren County Hospital medical staff in 1975.

Dr. Buono was a founding member of the Bowling Green Orthopedic Association, which later merged with other orthopedic groups to form the Western Kentucky Orthopedic Surgeon Association. He served as chancellor of the Southern Orthopaedic Association and was a member of the American Medical Association, Kentucky Medical Association and Mid-America Orthopaedic Association, among other professional organizations.

During the 1990 Gulf Crisis, Dr. Buono volunteered for U.S. Army service and saw artillery combat services, receiving numerous awards, including the Bronze Star. After his six-month tour of duty, he continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserves as a visiting orthopedic instructor for Army medical centers across the globe.
