Orthopedic surgeon Sidney Blair, MD, 94, passed away, OakPark.com reports.
Dr. Blair specialized in hand surgery, trauma, arthritis, peripheral nerve problems, congenital deformities of the hand and prevention of industrial hand injuries.
In 1986, Maywood, Ill.-based Loyola University Medical Center appointed Dr. Blair as chairman of orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation as well as the Dr. William M. Scholl Professiorial Chair. After his retirement in 1994, Dr. Blair was appointed emeritus professor. The following year, Loyola established the Sidney J. Blair, MD, Lecture in Hand Surgery.
Dr. Blair was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and American Society for Surgery of the Hand. At 90 years old, Dr. Blair published The Doctors Beck of Chicago, a biography of three brothers who made significant contributions to modern medicine in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
After earning his medical degree from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, Dr. Blair completed his residency at Edward Hines (Ill.), Jr. VA Hospital and Shriners Hospital for Children — Chicago. He then completed his post-graduate study in hand surgery at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City.
