Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Paul Odland dies at 96

Orthopedic surgeon Paul Odland, MD, 96, died, Gazette Xtra reports.

Dr. Odland was an orthopedic surgeon at Janesville (Wis.) Orthopedic Group and Mercy Hospital in Janesville, where he provided orthopedic care for more than 40 years.

With expertise in hip surgery, Dr. Odland was one of the first U.S. physicians to perform total hip surgery. He also developed the Odland Ankle, an artificial joint replacement implant with enhanced range of motion.

Dr. Odland participated in numerous medical missions to teach physicians in South America and Mexico new surgical techniques.

He was a founding member of the Pan American Doctors Association.

Dr. Odland earned his medical degree from the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine in Vermillion and Philadelphia-based Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. He then went on to become a physician for the U.S. Navy near the end of World War II.
