Eugene R. Mindell, MD, 96, passed away, The Buffalo News reports.
Dr. Mindell was a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specialized in bone cancer. He founded the orthopedic department at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at University at Buffalo (N.Y.) and served as its first chairman. Dr. Mindell established the area's first bone bank for bone grafts and set up a residency program and bone research laboratory during his career.
He was a pioneer in limb-sparing surgery and was among the first to adopt chemotherapy in the treatment of bone cancer patients in the 1970s. A Musculoskeletal Tumor Society co-founder, Dr. Mindell served as president of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, where he set up the board's certifying process for orthopedic surgeons. He was a member of the Orthopaedic Research Society and published more than 100 scientific papers. He served as deputy editor for the Journal of Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research and board of trustees member and associate editor for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
He received his medical degree and completed his residency at The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He and his wife endowed the June A. and Eugene R. Mindell Chair of Orthopaedics and established the annual Eugene R. Mindell and Harold Brody Clinical Translational Research Award for junior research scientists at the University of Buffalo .
