Orthopedic surgery is the medical specialty with the lowest proportion of female residents, according to a study in The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery.
Six things to know about women in orthopedic surgery:
1. Female orthopedic surgery residents represented 0.92 percent of all female medical residents in the 2016-17 academic year.
2. Orthopedic surgery is the specialty with the lowest proportion of female residents at 14.0 percent in the 2016-17 academic year — up from 11 percent in the 2005-06 academic year.
3. Women accounted for 17.8 percent of full-time orthopedic surgery faculty at U.S. medical schools, the lowest rate of all medical specialties.
4. In the 2015-16 academic year, only one orthopedic surgery department chair and 8.7 percent of orthopedic surgery professors were female.
5. Women made up 6.5 percent of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' membership.
6. The Knee Society (0.5 percent), The Hip Society (0.6 percent) and the Cervical Spine Research Society (1.5 percent) have the lowest proportion of female members. .
