Orthopedic surgeon Thomas Sculco, MD, and Cynthia Sculco, RN, donated $35,000 to Westerly (R.I.) High School earmarked for more than 100 Dell laptop computers, according to The Westerly Sun.
Dr. Sculco is an orthopedic surgery professor at Weill Cornell Medical College and surgeon-in-chief emeritus at the Hospital for Special Surgery, both based in New York City. Dr. and Mrs. Sculco graduated from Westerly High School in 1961.
"So much of education today is based on technology," Dr. Sculco told The Westerly Sun. "We wanted to do something for students at Westerly High School who are unable to afford computers."
Dr. and Mrs. Sculco are philanthropists who have contributed to the Memorial and Library Association of Westerly, the Chorus of Westerly, the Ocean Community YMCA and Providence, R.I.-based Brown University, among other organizations. They established a scholarship at Brown University, Dr. Sculco's alma mater, for a Westerly High School graduate with financial need.
