Becker's Spine Review reported on a bevvy of promotions and awards that went to orthopedic surgeons this year.

Thirty of the most notable achievements:

James P. Bradley, MD, will be the fourth alumnus of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic Sports Medicine Fellowship Program to become president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.

The Arthroscopy Association of North America named orthopedic surgeon Steven Wertheim, MD, of Atlanta-based Resurgens Orthopaedics, a Distinguished Arthroscopy Leader.

Board-certified orthopedic surgeon Werner Brooks, MD, won the Physician of the Year award at the Hendersonville, N.C.-based Pardee Hospital Foundation's annual gala.

The American Medical Association elected board-certified orthopedic surgeon Michael Suk, MD, to its board of trustees.

New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery awarded the former chief of its foot and ankle department, Jonathan Deland, MD, its lifetime achievement award.

New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery's Jack Davis, RN, became president of the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses on May 21.

Continental Who's Who acknowledged Steven C. Sheskier, RN, MD, as a Pinnacle Lifetime Achiever in the field of medicine.

Robert Hagen, MD, an orthopedic surgeon with Lafayette (Ind.) Orthopedic Clinic of Unity Healthcare, won the spring 2019 Franciscan Health Healing Hands Award.

Mark Getelman, MD, of Southern California Orthopedic Institute in Van Nuys, Calif., has been named the second vice president of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, placing him in the line of succession to serve as president for 2021-22.

Andrew Koman, MD, received the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation clinical research award at the 2019 annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Koman is professor and chair of the department of orthopedic surgery at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Board-certified orthopedic surgeon Michael Nett, MD, was promoted to chair of orthopedics at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, N.Y.

Vic Goradia, MD, was named one of the top three orthopedic surgeons in Richmond, Va., by Three Best Rated, an Austin, Texas-based organization.

Mark Hanna, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Atlanta-based Resurgens Orthopaedics, was named the medical honoree of the Arthritis Foundation's 2019 Walk to Cure Arthritis.

Shane Barton, MD, is the new president of Baton Rouge-based Louisiana Orthopaedic Association, a state trade organization affiliated with the AAOS.

Lowry Barnes, MD, chairman of orthopedics at the Little Rock-based University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, was a finalist for Arkansas Business' Administrator of the Year.

Amazon's best-seller list featured a book written by Sonya Sloan, MD, detailing what orthopedic surgeons should know, Chron.com reports. The best-seller, titled The Rules of Medicine: A Medical Professional's Guide for Success, is Dr. Sloan's first book.

The AAOS recognized Rick W. Wright, MD, with the 2019 Kappa Delta Ann Doner Vaughn Award. The award includes a $20,000 prize that Dr. Wright will use to fund further research.

The AAOS appointed Joseph Bosco III, MD, first vice president at AAOS 2019.

Michael Bolognesi, MD, became the 29th president of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons at the AAHKS Board of Directors' meeting in Las Vegas.

Philadelphia-based Penn Medicine's Kristy Weber, MD, became the AAOS' first female president at AAOS 2019.

The Hip Society and The Knee Society announced a new executive committee to lead the Current Concepts in Joint Replacement course: Daniel J. Berry, MD, of Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic, as senior director; Adolph V. Lombardi Jr., MD, of New Albany, Ohio-based Joint Implant Surgeons, as deputy director; and William J. Maloney III, MD, of Stanford (Calif.) University, as deputy director.

North Providence, R.I.-based Fatima Hospital appointed John Czerwein Jr., MD, as its chief of orthopedics. Dr. Czerwein Jr. replaced Dr. David Moss, MD, who served as orthopedic chief for seven years.

Stanford (Calif.) University orthopedic surgeon Constance Chu, MD, received an award and a $10 million grant to continue her osteoarthritis prevention research.

University of Alabama at Birmingham named Steven Theiss, MD, the department of orthopedics' first chairman.

Joseph Donnelly, MD, was elected president of the Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy, effective Jan. 26.

New York City-based NYU Langone Health named John G. Kennedy, MD, the orthopedic surgery department's foot and ankle division chief.

The International Association of Top Professionals selected Gary R. Kuzma, MD, as the top orthopedic surgeon for 2019. Dr. Kuzma is a hand surgeon and president of the Orthopedic and Hand Specialists of Greensboro (N.C.).

Adventist Health Lodi (Calif.) Memorial orthopedic surgeon Stephen Howell, MD, was awarded an honorary membership to the German Arthroplasty Society.
