5 OrthoCarolina surgeons establish joint infection center

Orthopedic

Thomas Fehring, MD, launched the OrthoCarolina Periprosthetic Joint Infection Center in Charlotte, N.C., with four fellow hip and knee surgeons.

Five insights:

1. Charlotte-based OrthoCarolina Hip and Knee Center's Dr. Fehring teamed up with Brian Curtin, MD, Bryan Springer, MD, Keith Fehring, MD, and Jesse Otero, MD, PhD, to create a joint infection center for complex cases.

2. The dedicated joint infection center is the first in the United States and receives referrals from across the region. It was established because infections involving a joint replacement are infrequent and difficult to treat.

3. The Periprosthetic Infection Center will facilitate research on total joint infections and treatment options.

4. The center's researchers are conducting a multicenter study to determine if infected joints can be removed and restored to the body on the same day. They're also researching the use of an antibiotic delivery system in infection treatment.

5. Earlier this month, the OrthoCarolina Hip and Knee Center received the Musculoskeletal Infection Society's George C. Cierny III Award, which recognizes excellence in musculoskeletal infection treatment.
