Orthopedic surgeon Edward Vanek, DO, was appointed to serve as a medical adviser for the city of Atwater, Calif., which declared an emergency situation March 9 over the coronavirus, according to The Merced Sun-Star.

Dr. Vanek will serve as a liaison between the medical community and city officials under a resolution introduced by Mayor Paul Creighton. The Atwater City Council unanimously supported the resolution.

County Supervisor Daron McDaniel invited Dr. Vanek to participate in daily calls about the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus.

Although no COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Merced County, where Atwater is located, there are confirmed cases in the neighboring counties of Fresno and Madera.
