Orthopedic

New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery suspended non-essential care due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Five things to know:

1. The orthopedics-focused hospital has temporarily ended non-essential treatments, including all care that is not time sensitive. The health system's clinical leadership developed a list of conditions and treatments that are considered essential.

2. HSS is continuing care for admitted patients as well as follow-up care for patients who recently underwent procedures at its facilities.

3. In February, the health system implemented measures to combat COVID-19 spread and accelerated scaling of its telehealth services. It also has an app that is used thousands of times per day to provide vital information.

4. HSS is working with other healthcare providers in the community to determine how its capacity can be used to help other hospitals provide care not related to COVID-19.

5. The health system did not give an end time to the suspension, stating: "HSS will lift this suspension as soon as deemed responsible."
