Lowry Barnes, MD, began his term as president of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons on March 25.
The AAHKS board welcomed Dr. Barnes in a virtual meeting since the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Previously, he served as president of the Arkansas Orthopaedic Society, the Southern Orthopaedic Association and the Society for Arthritic Joint Surgery.
Dr. Barnes published several peer-reviewed articles on total joint replacement and is the current editor of the Journal of Surgical Orthopaedic Advances.
In 2014, he joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock as professor and chair of the department of orthopedic surgery, where he was later named as The Carl L. Nelson, M.D. Distinguished Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery.
