New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery's Michael Ast, MD, has completed the first knee procedures with OrthAlign's Lantern surgical assistant.
Three things to know:
1. The handheld navigation device is designed for total and unicompartmental knee replacement, according to a Nov. 6 news release.
2. The system uses micro-electromechanical sensors including gyroscopes and accelerometers to register patient anatomy and assist surgeons with precise implant placement.
3. OrthAlign plans to expand the system to total hip replacement and add intraoperative assessment tools such as soft tissue balancing.
