Florida orthopedic surgeon designs coronavirus mask for athletes with helmets

Orthopedic

Keith Hechtman, MD, a sports medicine specialist with Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute, has developed a mask intended to protect helmet-wearing athletes from COVID-19, NBC2 reports.

"Cagemask is a mask applied to the cage that has a helmet to help stop the spread of droplets," Dr. Hechtman told the publication in a Dec. 3 interview. "The inner layer is a cotton microfiber and the outer layer is more of a polyester-type stretch material, and it allows the material to move back-and-forth in the course of handling."

The two-layer reusable mask attaches to the protective cage of a sports helmet, such as those worn in football, lacrosse and hockey.

The manufacturer told NBC2 that the mask does not inhibit breathing or performance.
