Atlantic Health System hospitals add holographic 'mixed reality' tech for orthopedic surgeries

Orthopedic

Two medical centers in Atlantic Health System are introducing "mixed reality" visualization technology for use in shoulder, hand and upper extremity surgeries, the system said Aug. 10.

Morristown (N.J.) Medical Center and Summit, N.J.-based Overlook Medical Center are among the first facilities to implement mixed reality tech for surgery, according to a news release. The technology projects a virtual hologram beside the patient during surgery so the surgeon can integrate preoperative planning software with real-time operating room data.

"Mixed reality provides a technologically advanced tool at the surgeon’s fingertips for simplifying complex surgeries and providing more precise, consistent and reliable results," said James C. Wittig, MD, chair of the department of orthopedics at Morristown Medical Center and medical director of orthopedic oncology at Atlantic.

Morristown is using Stryker’s Blueprint Mixed Reality, and Overlook is using Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 headset.
