6 orthopedic facilities that cost $24M or more

Construction in the orthopedic sector is booming once again after many projects were canceled or stalled because of economic challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Six orthopedic facilities costing at least $26 million that were opened or announced in the past two months:

1. Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger is planning a $180 million orthopedic center in Buckhorn. Construction on the Orthopaedic Center Pennsylvania will begin in early 2022, with its opening set for 2024.

2. Emory University Healthcare's Musculoskeletal Institute opened Oct. 7 in Atlanta. The facility, part of Emory Healthcare's $1 billion health innovation district, cost $130 million and spans 180,000 square feet.

3. On Nov. 1, Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center opened a $100 million, 165,000-square-foot hospital for orthopedic, reconstructive and plastic surgery in Fairlawn, Ohio.

4. Chillicothe, Ohio-based Adena Health Systems opened an orthopedic center Sept. 1. Four years in the making, the five-story facility spans 11,000 square feet and cost $70 million.

5. United Regional Health Care Systems received approval to build a $26 million orthopedic and sports medicine center in Wichita Falls, Texas. The facility is expected to break ground in January and open one year later. 

6. Columbus, Ohio-based Orthopedic One broke ground on its new Westerville headquarters in October. The 80,000-square-foot center will cost $24 million and is set to open in spring 2023.
