Surgeons leading the top US orthopedic residency programs

Doximity's 2022-2023 residency navigator ranks the top residency programs for multiple medical specialties in the U.S., including orthopedics.

Here are the program directors of the top four orthopedic residency programs:

Hospital for Special Surgery (New York City): Duretti Fufa, MD

Dr. Fufa is program director for the HSS five-year orthopedic residency program. She is a hand surgeon with residency training from HSS and fellowship training from Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Fufa has done volunteer medical work in Germany, China, India, Honduras and Ethiopia and works closely with CURE Ethiopia Children’s Hospital.

Washington University in St. Louis: Alexander Aleem, MD

Dr. Aleem, program director of the orthopedic residency, works with associate directors Martin Boyer, MD, and Lauren Tatman, MD. Dr. Aleem's practice focuses on rotator cuff tears and other shoulder conditions. He earned his medical degree at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and completed his residency at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science (Rochester, Minn.): Jonathan Barlow, MD 

Dr. Barlow is program director of the orthopedic residency. He completed his residency at Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education. He also completed fellowship training at Philadelphia-based Rothman Institute and Columbus-based Ohio State University. His practice focuses on shoulder and elbow surgery.

New York University Grossman School of Medicine (New York City): Eric Strauss, MD

Dr. Strauss is residency program director for orthopedics and works with associate directors Mara Karamitopoulos, MD, and Ran Schwarzkopf, MD. Dr. Strauss specializes in sports medicine and has published more than 200 journal articles and book chapters. He received the Herodicus Award for excellence in sports medicine research.
