Orthopedic

Charisse Sparks, MD, an orthopedic trauma surgeon and chief medical officer of AppliedVR, has joined Inspire Medical Systems' board of directors.

Four things to know:

1. Previously, Dr. Sparks was vice president of DePuy Synthes, where she was a leader in Johnson & Johnson's "Our Race to Health Equity," an initiative that aims to eradicate racial and social injustice as a public health threat by seeking to eliminate health inequities for people of color.

2. She has experience in research and development, regulatory affairs, quality, commercial, and health economics and market access.

3. Dr. Sparks was the third Black female, fellowship-trained orthopedic trauma surgeon in the country, completing her training at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Inspire said in an Aug. 1 news release.

4. Inspire develops minimally invasive systems for patients with obstructive sleep apnea and AppliedVR develops virtual reality-based treatments designed to address pain and other conditions.
