Tyrod Taylor, a former quarterback for the Los Angeles Chargers, is suing David Gazzaniga, MD, after suffering a punctured lung in 2020, ESPN reported Sept. 18.
Mr. Taylor, who now plays for the New York Giants, had a pain injection for cracked ribs in September 2020 when his lung was punctured. At the time, Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn described the incident as a "mistake." Mr. Taylor at the time decided not to file a grievance for the incident, ESPN reported in December 2020.
However, in May 2021, Mr. Taylor filed a lawsuit against Dr. Gazzaniga seeking at least $5 million in damages. Mr. Taylor alleged "severe physical pain resulting in hospitalization, physical therapy, emotional distress and other past pain and suffering" in the lawsuit, according to ESPN.
His injury also meant he had to enter free agency as a backup quarterback instead of a starting quarterback, the lawsuit said. The salary difference is at least $5 million.
A trial was scheduled for November but both parties agreed to push it to April.
