Douglas Padgett, MD, will succeed Bryan Kelly, MD, as New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery's surgeon-in-chief and medical director.
Dr. Padgett, a joint replacement specialist, will step into the role when Dr. Kelly transitions to his new appointment as CEO, HSS said in a Feb. 15 news release. Dr. Padgett is chief emeritus of adult reconstruction and replacement services, and he works as a professor at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. He was named HSS' associate surgeon-in-chief in 2019.
Dr. Padgett came to HSS as a resident in 1985, and he earned his medical degree from New York Medical College in Valhalla. Before coming to HSS, he was a battalion surgeon with the U.S. Marines and was awarded the Naval Achievement Medal for meritorious service.
"Dr. Padgett's appointment is a milestone in the historic, phased leadership transition started last month," HSS Board Chairs Thomas Lister and Robert Steel said in the release. "Together, Dr. Kelly, Dr. Padgett and the many other great leaders across the enterprise are poised to build upon the remarkable heritage of HSS to achieve even greater success for patients and impact on the field of musculoskeletal health."
