Stephen Adams, MD, head team physician and medical director for the Chicago Cubs, retired, the MLB said Feb. 21.
Dr. Adams has been affiliated with the Cubs for more than 50 years, according to a news release. He began working at the first aid station at Wrigley Field and went on to work as a team physician. In 2000, he was named head team physician and medical director.
During his tenure, Dr. Adams oversaw medical care of four division championship teams and the 2016 World Series champions. He will remain with the Cubs as a special advisor to the president and general manager.
"Dr. Adams has had such a positive impact not only on the Chicago Cubs but also on the sport’s medical policies and guidelines," Cubs president of baseball operations, Jed Hoyer, said in the release. "His service, empathy and dedication to our organization and the game has benefited countless players, uniformed personnel and front office associates. We thank Dr. Adams for his many years of caring for our team, staff and families."
Dr. Adams is board certified in sports medicine, emergency medicine and internal medicine. He is also chief of sports medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.
