American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons on March 9 awarded three orthopedic surgoens for their work in service, leadership and diversity.
Mark Myerson, MD, recived the 2023 Humanitarian Award. Dr. Myersn, a surgeon in Denver, was reognized for his work providing foot and ankle care to underserved communities. He founded Steps2Walk, an international volunteer organization that has provided more than 1,400 surgical operations globally.
Alex Jahangir, MD, earned the 2023 William W. Tipton Jr., MD, Leadership Award. He is a professor and vice chair of Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. He's a recognized leader in orthopedics and was also head of the Nashville COVID019 task force during the height of hte pandemic.
Mary O'Connor, MD, recieved the 2023 Diversity Award. She is professor emerita at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic, and founded Vori Health. She was the first female member of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, the International Society of Limb Salvage and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. She was also the first female surgeon in The Knee Society. She was president of the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons, AAHKS, ISOLS, MSTS and the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society.
