Edwin Hsu, MD, performed a hip resurfacing procedure on NHL winger Patrick Kane June 1, according to reports by Sportsnet NHL reporter Elliotte Friedman and ESPN.
Hip resurfacing is an alternative procedure to a total hip replacement. In a hip resurfacing procedure, damaged bone and cartilage is trimmed instead of being removed.
Mr. Kane's agent said the surgery was successful and the recovery time is four to six months.
Dr. Hsu is an orthopedic surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He specializes in hip resurfacing procedures as well as hip and knee replacements.
