University Orthopedics launches program to get more women in orthopedics

Providence, R.I.-based University Orthopedics has launched a new program, Ortho in Action, to encourage more women to pursue careers in orthopedics, according to a June 27 report from NBC affiliate WJAR.

Around 7 percent of orthopedic surgeons are women, up from about 6 percent last year, according to the report.

Julia Katarincic, MD, a hand surgeon at University Orthopedics, is helping to lead the action program, which specifically targets female high school students.

The hands-on pilot program works with female students at two area high schools to encourage an interest in orthopedic surgery. In the fall, the program is set to expand into four area schools.
