Tampa Bay Rays pitcher to undergo 3rd elbow reconstruction surgery since 2016

Orthopedic

Keith Meister, MD, is set to perform a hybrid internal brace procedure of the ulnar collateral ligament on Drew Rasmussen, a pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays, on July 24.

The procedure will be the third right elbow reconstruction surgery of Mr. Rasmussen's career. He underwent Tommy John surgery on the elbow in March 2016 and August 2017, according to a July 9 report by mlb.com.

Mr. Rasmussen has not pitched since May 11 due to a flexor strain in his elbow after experiencing nerve sensitivity in his right forearm.

The surgery will cause Mr. Rasmussen to miss the rest of the 2023 MLB season and part of the 2024 season, the report said.

Dr. Meister is the director of sports medicine at the Texas Metroplex Institute for Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Surgery in Arlington and is the head team physician for the Texas Rangers, another MLB team.
