West Virginia is the worst paying state on record for orthopedic surgeons in 2023, according to data published April 25 from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' occupational employment statistics survey.
Surgeons in West Virginia earn an average of $229,250 a year, which is $403,750 lower than the average of $633,000, according to AMN Healthcare's "2023 Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives" report released July 24.
It is also $325,270 lower than salaries in the highest paying state, Hawaii, according to Bureau of Labor statistics data.
