Orthopedic surgeons, Michigan orthopedic practice settle noncompete lawsuit

The four orthopedic surgeons who sued Grand Rapids-based Orthopaedic Associates of Michigan over a noncompete clause have reached a settlement.

Grand Rapids-based Trinity Health; Timothy Henne, MD; Timothy Lenters, MD; John Healey, MD; and Geoffrey Sandman, MD, and OAM will all handle their own fees from the case, according to a stipulation and order of dismissal filed Sept. 6 in the U.S. District Court for Michigan's Western District.

The surgeons filed their lawsuit in January alleging OAM's noncompete clause forced them to leave Kent County. They previously worked with OAM and wanted to work for IHA, an affiliate of Trinity Health, as employed physicians. But OAM allegedly insisted on enforcement of its noncompete clause.

The surgeons have since begun working at Muskegon, Mich.-based Trinity Health Medical Group Orthopaedics.
