Keith Meister, MD, performed Tommy John surgery on Sandy Alcantara, a pitcher for the Miami Marlins, on Oct. 6.
The operation was on Mr. Alcantara's right elbow after he suffered a right ulnar collateral ligament sprain after pitching in a game on Sept. 3, according to an Oct. 6 news release from mlb.com.
Mr. Alcantara pitched in a rehab assignment on Sept. 21 but shut himself down for the remainder of the season after experiencing forearm tightness.
He is expected to miss the entirety of the 2024 MLB season, the release said.
Dr. Meister is the director of sports medicine at the Texas Metroplex Institute for Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Surgery in Arlington and is the head team physician for the Texas Rangers, another MLB team.
