7 things to know about Congress' 1 orthopedic surgeon

John Barrasso, MD, is the only orthopedic surgeon serving among the 19 physicians in the 118th U.S. Congress. Dr. Barrasso is a Republican senator from Wyoming and was first elected to his seat in 2007. 

Here are seven things to know about Dr. Barrasso: 

1. In 2017, Dr. Barrasso was recognized by the American Medical Association for being a government professional committed to healthcare. 

2. Dr. Barrasso served in the Wyoming state senate from 2003 to 2007 before being elected to the U.S. Senate. 

3. In 2018, Dr. Barrasso was reelected with 67% of the vote. 

4. Dr. Barrasso serves as chair of the Senate Republican Conference. 

5. Dr. Barrasso spent 24 years as a practicing orthopedic surgeon, serving as president of the Wyoming Medical Society. He was also named Wyoming Physician of the Year.

6. Dr. Barrasso has sponsored several pieces of healthcare-focused legislation, including the Protecting Medicaid Beneficiaries Act of 2023, the Rural Health Clinic Burden Reduction Act, and the Protecting Patient Access to Cancer and Complex Therapies Act of 2023. 

7. Dr. Barrasso's current term ends on Jan. 3, 2025. The reelection period will take place in 2024.
