From leading new centers to being honored for their specialty, here are five surgeons on the cutting edge of sports medicine:
James Andrews, MD: Dr. Andrews is the founder of Andrews Sports Medicine in Birmingham, Ala., and previously served as chair of the board and medical director of the American Sports Medicine Institute. He was recently named the recipient of the 2023 Alabama Football Legend Award.
Kevin Borchard, MD: Dr. Borchard, an orthopedic surgeon at Colorado Advanced Orthopedics, Sports Medicine and Spine in Meeker, recently completed his 1,000th procedure utilizing the Mako SmartRobotics surgery system.
Benjamin Ma, MD: Dr. Ma was appointed chair of the orthopedic surgery department at San Francisco-based UCSF Health on Dec. 26. He previously served as chief of sports medicine and shoulder surgery for the system and is research chair of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.
Joseph Tauro, MD: Dr. Tauro and his practice recently partnered with Freehold, N.J.-based Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute, which is part of Health Plus Management. Dr. Tauro's practice — Toms River, N.J.-based Ocean County Sports Medicine — launched in 1988.
Douglas Turgeon, MD: Dr. Turgeon will lead the Ashe Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine for Jefferson, N.C.-based Ashe Memorial Hospital. He has more than 35 years of experience as an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine physician and owned an orthopedic surgery and sports medicine practice in Dallas before joining Ashe Memorial.
