Meet the surgeons using Apple Vision Pro in the OR

Orthopedic

Four orthopedic and spine surgeons have made strides using Apple's Apple Vision Pro headset in the operating room in 2024.

Here are the surgeons using the technology in the OR:

1. G. Russell Huffman, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Philadelphia-based Rothman Orthopedic Institute, recently became the first surgeon to complete a reverse total shoulder arthroplasty using the Apple Vision Pro. The headset was used for organizing and managing the procedure. Dr. Huffman specializes in shoulder and elbow surgeries and currently practices at Rothman's Orlando, Fla., location. He spent 16 years as an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania, serving as director of the shoulder and elbow fellowship for over a decade.

2. In March, spine surgeons Fady Sedra, MD, and Syed Aftab, MD, became the first in the United Kingdom to use Apple's Vision Pro headset during a spinal operation. Dr. Sedra is a surgeon at London-based Cromwell Hospital. He specializes in spinal deformity correction and lumbar and cervical disc disease. He also practices spine surgery at a consultant level at the Royal London Hospital. Dr. Aftab is also an orthopedic consultant and spine surgeon at Cromwell, specializing in spine surgery and spinal cord injuries. He is the first surgeon in the U.K. to perform robotic-assisted spinal surgery and has pioneered a minimally invasive spine surgery technique in the U.K. developed by Florida spine surgeon Robert Masson, MD.

3. In February, Dr. Masson became the first spine surgeon to bring Apple Vision Pro into the operating room. He used the headset as a logistics and organizational tool for several minimally invasive spine surgeries. Dr. Masson has more than 36 years of experience in spine and neurosurgery and is the founder of Orlando, Fla.-based Masson Spine Institute and medical director of the NeuroSpine Center of Excellence at Orlando Health-Health Central Hospital in Ocoee, Fla. He has completed more than 13,000 surgeries and trained more than 1,500 surgeons during his career.
