The U.S. Justice Department settled 139 administrative claims from sexual abuse allegations by former physician and USA Gymnastics official Larry Nassar, the agency said April 23.
The settlement agreements total $138.7 million, according to a news release. They will resolve administrative claims against the U.S. alleging the FBI "failed to conduct an adequate investigation of Nassar’s conduct."
"For decades, Lawrence Nassar abused his position, betraying the trust of those under his care and medical supervision while skirting accountability," Acting Associate Attorney General Benjamin Mizer said in the release. "These allegations should have been taken seriously from the outset. While these settlements won't undo the harm Nassar inflicted, our hope is that they will help give the victims of his crimes some of the critical support they need to continue healing."
Mr. Nassar was convicted in 2017 on child pornography charges with a 60-year sentence, and the following year he was handed a 175-year sentence for a pattern of sexual abuse. He lost his medical license permanently in 2018.
In 2021, victims reached a $380 million settlement with USA Gymnastics, the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee and their insurers.
