4 spine, orthopedic layoffs in 2024

Spine and orthopedic practices and devicemakers have restructured business and laid off staff in 2024. Here are four layoffs Becker's reported about so far.

1. Medtronic is laying off 44 employees from its Carlsbad, Calif., facility, according to an April 25 WARN notice. The WARN notice was processed April 27 and will take effect on May 19, the report said. A spokesperson told Becker's in an email that the layoffs happened in March.

2. Latham-based OrthopedicsNY said in February it would lay off 34 employees, according to a WARN notice. The layoffs were expected to happen in May, according to the Feb. 1 notice. OrthopedicsNY has 582 employees total. The layoffs won't affect patient-facing roles, the practice's CEO said in a statement shared with Becker's Feb. 6.

3. NuVasive in January announced the layoff of 157 employees at its San Diego headquarters, according to WARN notice data from the state of California.

4. Rothman Orthopaedic Institute planned to lay off 5% of its workforce, a spokesperson for the Philadelphia-based practice told Becker's. The layoff process started Jan. 8.
