10 states with the most orthopedic residents

While specialist shortages persist nationwide, some states could have more luck filling open orthopedic surgeon slots than others. 

New York and California have over 75 orthopedic residents, more than any other state; and over half of residents stay in the state where they train to practice medicine full-time.  

Here are the 10 states with the most orthopedic residents, according to 2024 data from the National Resident Matching Program: 

1. New York: 101

2. California: 78

3. Pennsylvania: 68

4. (tie) Michigan: 64

4. (tie) Ohio: 64

5. Texas: 56

6. Florida: 45

7. (tie) Illinois: 35

7. (tie) New Jersey: 35

8. (tie) Massachusetts: 26

8. (tie) Missouri: 26
