A plurality of orthopedic surgeons cite dealing with Medicare and other insurers as the most difficult part of their jobs, according to Medscape's 2024 "Orthopedist Compensation Report," published May 24. 

Here are the most challenging parts about being an orthopedic surgeon in 2024, according to the survey: 

Note: Four percent of respondents said there are no challenges with being an orthopedist. 

Dealing with Medicare/other insurers and getting fair reimbursements: 27% 

Having so many rules and regulations: 21% 

Dealing with difficult patients: 12% 

Having to work long hours: 12% 

Working with an EHR system: 9%

Other: 9% 

Worrying about being sued: 6%
