What Hospital for Special Surgery did in the first half of 2024

In the first half of 2024, New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery grew multiple partnerships and grew its leadership.

Here are 11 moves to know: 

1. HSS was among 134 hospitals named to Healthgrades' Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery Excellence ranking, and it is the only hospital to earn the top rating in all four surgery cohorts.

2. West Palm Beach-based Hospital for Special Surgery Florida named Heather Woolf, RN, as vice president for its Palm Beach County facilities.

3. HSS and Stamford (Conn.) Health established the HSS Spine Center with Stamford Health. The spine center, formed in 2023, is led by Steven McAnany, MD, and Andrea Douglas, MD.

4. West Palm Beach-based Hospital for Special Surgery Florida received a $2 million contribution from HSS Trustee Marina Kellen French and her daughter Annabelle Garrett of Wellington.

5. HSS named Jeff Wang as senior vice president and chief innovation officer.

6. HSS has extended its care partnership with the WNBA's New York Liberty. HSS has been the official care partner of the team for 19 seasons, and the extension will add five more years to the partnership.

7. HSS launched a clinical trial that will evaluate the efficacy of concentrated bone marrow aspirate as an addition to ACL revision surgery.

8. HSS is set to collaborate with Best in Class MD to launch a bundled surgery program for orthopedics. The Best in Class MD value-based surgical bundle program is designed to serve as an intermediary to worker's compensation carriers nationwide

9. HSS honored two physicians and announced a $12 million multiyear gift from billionaire Kenneth Griffin. Steven B. Haas, MD, chief of the knee service, and Hollis Potter, MD, chair of radiology and imaging were honored on June 3 for their work.

10. Newsweek has released its annual list of the 150 best spine surgeons in the U.S. for 2024, and seven surgeons from HSS were included.

11. The Dalai Lama had a knee replacement at HSS on June 28.
