How Premier Health is encouraging women to get into orthopedics

Dayton, Ohio-based Premier Health has launched a new program intended to interest more young women and minorities in pursuing orthopedic careers, according to a July 20 report from NBC affiliate WDTN.

Women have lower representation in orthopedic surgery than any other physician specialty, making up just 10% of the orthopedic workforce, according to the report.

By contrast, 23% of Premier Health's orthopedic surgeons are women. Premier Health holds a weeklong summer externship program, which focuses on getting young women and minorities interested in the field.

In its first year in 2021, the student externship had just two students, while this year, it has 20.
