Why Mississippi is the worst state for healthcare

Mississippi has been named the worst state for healthcare in 2024, according to WalletHub's 2024 ranking published July 29. 

For the annual ranking, the financial services company looked at all 50 states and Washington D.C., ranking them on measures of cost, access and outcomes.

Metrics included the cost of a medical visit, average community hospital expenses per inpatient day, life expectancy and number of hospital beds per capita. 

Mississippi came in last, ranking 51 for healthcare overall, and ranking in the bottom half for additional metrics, including cost, access and outcomes. 

The state's overall healthcare score was 46.01, over 20 points lower than that of the best state, Minnesota, which scored 67.38. 

Mississippi ranked 25th in overall cost of healthcare, 39th in overall access and 51st in access. The state was also recently ranked as the 49th worst state to operate a business in.
