What's next for Zimmer Biomet's smart knee implant?

Zimmer Biomet's smart knee implant, Persona IQ, is gearing up for more development and expansion in the coming year, CEO Ivan Tornos said in an Aug. 7 earnings call.

Persona IQ debuted in 2021 and uses a smart sensor to count recovery metrics. It earned CMS' New Technology Add-on Payment in 2023.

Now, the company is looking ahead to the device's next steps.

"We remain excited," Mr. Tornos said, as transcribed by Seeking Alpha. "The adoption is speeding up. We should see some acceleration in the second half of 2024, part of the new product contribution for 2024 and in a more meaningful way in 2025. We've now crossed 3 billion data points around range of motion, mobility … We launched what we call recovery curves, which enables us to cross-reference how certain patients are performing versus others."

Zimmer Biomet also plans to have payer discussions for risk-sharing agreements, Mr. Tornos said. He also addressed speculations about a short stem extension for the implant.

"We're going to be launching that … at the end of 2024," Mr. Tornos said. "We got the approval. The design is ready to go [and] the sets are ready to go. That's part of the acceleration in the second half of 2024, more meaningfully in 2025. We've now signed agreements, partnerships with some of the major hospitals around the U.S."
