Shane McGowan, MD, a spine surgeon at Richmond-based OrthoVirginia, has become the first in the state to complete 100 spine surgeries using augmented reality navigation, according to an Aug. 27 LinkedIn post.
Dr. McGowan completed 100 procedures using Augmedics' Xvision system, which uses a headset to project the position of surgical tools on a CT scan and lets physicians look at the patient and navigation data simultaneously.
Augmented reality navigation is becoming more popular nationwide, as systems in several states have begun adopting the technology for spine and orthopedic procedures.
