Keith Meister, MD, performed elbow surgery on David Fry, player for the Cleveland Guardians, on Oct. 30 in Dallas, according to a Nov. 4 report by espn.com.
The reconstructive procedure repaired Mr. Fry's ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, using a technique involving a hybrid/internal brace and tendon graft. The surgery also addressed a strained flexor tendon.
Mr. Fry experienced elbow pain for the final few months of the MLB season, which prevented him from playing in the field. The team estimates Mr. Fry will need six to eight months of recovery before being able to hit, and up to a full year before being able to play in the field.
The hybrid elbow procedure is an alternative to Tommy John surgery, which usually has a recovery time of 12 to 15 months, the report said.
Dr. Meister is the director of sports medicine at the Texas Metroplex Institute for Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Surgery in Arlington and is the head team physician for the Texas Rangers.
