American Joint Replacement Registry, published by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, logged more than 4 million hip and knee replacements as of March, according to a Nov. 7 news release.
Seven things to know:
1. The American Joint Replacement Registry 2024 report reflects data shared between 2012 to 2023 from 1,447 institutions.
2. ASCs remain an important role in total joint replacements. There are more than 62,000 procedural cases reported, a 70% increase since 2022.
3. Hospital discharges to home compared to a skilled nursing facility is an upward trend with 92% of patients going home after elective total hip replacements.
4. There's "substantial improvement" in patient reported outcomes from before surgery to one year postoperatively.
5. By the end of 2023, 631 sites out of 1,447 submitted patient reported outcomes data. That's a 27% increase in sites compared to the 2023 AJRR annual report.
6. "Surpassing 4 million captured hip and knee arthroplasty procedures solidifies AJRR's status as the largest orthopedic registry by annual procedure count," James Huddleston, III, MD, chair of the AJRR Steering Committee, said in the release. "This achievement reflects our collective commitment to improving patient care and gathering data that can influence the quality and effectiveness of treatments across the nation. The success of the AJRR wouldn't be possible without the support and contributions of our participating sites, surgeons and industry partners."
