Irvine, Calif.-based Hoag Orthopedic Institute has named Hafiz Kassam, MD, as its inaugural director of its shoulder reconstruction program.

Dr. Kassam will lead development and strategic direction for Hoag Orthopedic's shoulder program and integrate new innovations in shoulder treatment with patient care, according to a Nov. 12 press release sent to Becker's. He will also chair the institute's shoulder program committee, and focus on advancing education, quality improvement and performance initiatives across the program.

Dr. Kassam is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulder and elbow surgery, minimally invasive techniques in shoulder and elbow joint replacement, as well as advanced arthroscopy, traumatic reconstruction and non-operative treatments.

He has performed nearly 2,000 shoulder replacements and arthroscopic reconstructions in his career, so far.

He was also the first to complete a robotic-assisted reverse shoulder arthroplasty in California and the fifth surgeon in the world to utilize the technology. HOI performs the highest volume of shoulder replacements and shoulder reconstructions in the county, according to the institute.
