Dr. Greg Mathien named SEC physician of the year

Greg Mathien, MD, a senior orthopedic surgeon at Knoxville-based Tennessee Athletics, has been named the 2025 Southeastern Conference Team Physician of the Year forOrthopedics.

Dr. Mathien has served as orthopedic team physician for Tennessee's men's and women's sports teams for 33 years, according to a Jan. 7 press release. 

The SEC team physician awards, which began in 2003, are voted on annually by the SEC directors of sports medicine. The award is given to a team orthopedic surgeon every other year. 

Tennessee is one of only four SEC schools to have three team physicians win the award in its 23-year history, according to the release. 

Previous Tennessee winners include orthopedic surgeon William Youmans, MD, and primary care physician Chris Klenck, MD. 

Dr. Mathien joined the university in 1991 for a sports medicine fellowship under the direction of Dr. Youmans. 

He currently serves as the chief medical officer for Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic, as well as the senior team orthopedic surgeon for the University of Tennessee athletic programs. 

He has also operated on and cared for Olympic medalists and professional athletes, and plays an active role in national sports medicine research, including an ongoing ACL revision study.
