Adolescent knee pain could lead to chronic joint problems in adulthood, study says

A new study from Aarhus University in Denmark, published in BMC Pediatrics, suggests that knee pain often considered routine in adolescents could lead to chronic pain and joint issues in adulthood.

The study found one in three adolescents between ages 12 and 19 experienced some form of knee pain.

"It can be fairly common for young people to dismiss or ignore knee pain, but it’s really important for young patients to see an orthopedic specialist about any prolonged pain or symptoms to avoid more serious joint and mobility problems in the future," said Eric Millstein, MD, a Beverly Hills, Calif., orthopedic surgeon in a news release.
