Do orthopedic surgeons use marijuana?
Orthopedic surgeons are in a three-way specialty tie for the second highest percentage of physicians who report having used marijuana at some point in their lives, according to the Medscape Orthopedist Lifestlye Report 2015. Around 29 percent of orthopedic surgeons report having ever used marijuana.
Here is the breakdown by age for orthopedic surgeons who have used marijuana:
1. 30 percent of orthopedic surgeons 66 years or older.
2. 36 percent of orthopedic surgeons 56 to 65 years old.
3. 27 percent of orthopedic surgeons 46 to 55 years old.
4. 17 percent of orthopedic surgeons 36 to 45 years old.
5. 33 percent of orthopedic surgeons 35 years or younger.
But these numbers could include the surgeons' younger years; only 4 percent of orthopedic surgeons report marijuana use in the past year:
6. 3 percent of orthopedic surgeons who used marijuana in the past year are burnt out.
7. 1 percent of orthopedic surgeons currently using marijuana are not burnt out.
8. 32 percent of orthopedic surgeons who reported having used marijuana ever are currently feeling burnt out.
9. 26 percent of orthopedic surgeons who reported having ever used marijuana are not feeling burnt out.
Interestingly, orthopedic surgeons who have used marijuana are less likely to drink alcohol. Among those who have never used marijuana, 68 percent report two or more alcoholic drinks daily; only 32 percent of those using marijuana report the same number of daily drinks.
So, knowing the percentage of orthopedic surgeons who have used marijuana, how many think it should be legalized?
10. 17 percent who never used marijuana think it should never be legalized; 7 percent who have say the same.
11. 22 percent who used marijuana, and 21 percent who have not, think it should be legalized for medical purposes only.
12. 46 percent of orthopedic surgeons who used marijuana think it should be legalized totally; 30 percent who have not hold the same position.
