Dr. Joseph Barker gives national lecture on knee surgery cartilage treatment — 7 things to know

Dr. Joseph Barker, orthopedic surgeon at Raleigh (N.C.) Orthopaedic Clinic was invited to present on utilizing technology in treating cartilage injuries in the knee in Omaha.

Here are seven things to know:

 

1. Dr. Barker was the keynote speaker for the event sponsored by Smith and Nephew, a global company based in London.

 

2. He specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery of the knee, hip and shoulder. Dr. Barker is presently a team physician for the Carolina Hurricanes, North Carolina State University as well as Broughton High School.

 

3. Dr. Barker stated using coblation technology hosts potential for patients suffering from early arthritis.

 

4. He completed his orthopedic residency at Cornell University/Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, which is ranked by US News and World Report as the #1 orthopedic hospital in the United States.

 

5. Dr. Barker previously was an assistant team physician for DePaul University, Chicago Steel Hockey, the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bulls. He was completing his sports medicine fellowship  at Rush University Medical Center at the time.

 

6. He has composed over 20 book chapters and scientific articles on knee, hip and shoulders in addition to being on the editorial board for the Journal of Knee Surgery.

 

7. Dr. Barker's clinical and research interests consist of ACL injuries, rotator cuff tears of the shoulder, meniscus surgery, hip arthroscopy and cartilage repair.
